Everyone knows that the economy has taken its toll, especially on the people with the least. Four years ago, Ken Wexler brought his family to volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, which distributes food to local pantries and shelters that feed approximately 850,000 people every day. Ken was so affected by the experience that he promoted the idea of volunteering the entire firm for a day of service during the holiday period. It has since become a tradition for Wexler Wallace to volunteer its time each year to a charitable cause. It not only exposes us to the difficulties others experience, but it enables us to try to help them and reminds us of what we are lucky to have.
So, on Tuesday morning, Wexler Wallace employees cast their work aside and spent the day volunteering at a local homeless shelter, Cornerstone Community Outreach(CCO) in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. Cornerstone Community Outreach is a non-profit organization, created in 1989 to raise the quality of life for low-income residents through social, educational and economic development programs. CCO’s programs include development and preservation of decent and affordable housing for the poor, job training and creation, educational and social programs, and feeding and sheltering the homeless.
Over the past 20 years, Cornerstone Community Outreach’s programs have expanded to serve nearly 500 men, women and children daily. With the amount of help CCO offers, they are always in need of volunteers and donations. CCO is currently accepting donations of toothbrushes, soap, towels, diapers, baby blankets and coats for all ages. For a complete list CCO’s ongoing needs, please click here.
Wexler Wallace employees spent their day at CCO making and serving lunch to residents, preparing toiletry kits, sorting donations and unloading a truck food from where else but the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Wexler Wallace was incredibly thankful to spend the day helping this wonderful non-profit organization. We are grateful that such an organization exists to help so many unfortunate families and individuals who are struggling just to survive.
