WBE in the News: ProPublica Investigation Exposes Ambetter’s “Ghost Network” of Health Providers

9.9.2024

A recent investigation by ProPublica has uncovered serious issues with major health insurance provider Ambetter over its misleading healthcare provider directories. The report reveals that Ambetter has been listing numerous doctors and healthcare providers as “in-network” for its policyholders, but many of these providers are either unavailable or do not accept Ambetter insurance, creating what is referred to as a “ghost network.”

This issue has left patients unable to access the care they need, forcing them to seek out-of-network providers at a higher cost or, in some cases, to go without necessary medical treatment. Interviews with patients across the U.S. highlighted the frustration and distress caused by these inaccurate directories. One patient reported calling 10 listed providers, only to discover that none were actually available.

The ProPublica article, which references WBE’s ongoing lawsuit against Centene Corporation, is a difficult but important read for anyone looking to understand the human cost of ghost networks. While Ambetter has argued that it continually works to update its directories, the ProPublica report shows that the problem persists, affecting vulnerable patients who rely on accurate information to receive affordable care.
