On Tuesday, August 27, California Attorney General Rob Bonta took a significant step in the fight to protect consumers by filing an amicus brief with the California Supreme Court. The brief, submitted in connection with the ongoing case Gulkarov v. Plum, PBC, calls for the establishment of uniform standards that would provide greater clarity in how consumer protection laws are enforced across the state. Bonta’s actions come in response to growing concerns that California’s existing consumer protection laws are inconsistently applied, leaving consumers vulnerable to deceptive business practices.
In his amicus brief, Attorney General Bonta makes a compelling argument for the California Supreme Court to provide clear guidance on this issue. He emphasizes that both deceptive omissions and affirmative misrepresentations can be equally harmful to consumers and should be treated with the same level of seriousness.
